The new iPhone series was presented at the company’s headquarters in Cupertino, California on Monday (September 9). The iPhone 16 will be the first to integrate the generative artificial intelligence (AI) system developed by the company.

Apple CEO Tim Cook presented the new products on Monday in a video shown at Apple headquarters. “We are excited to introduce the first iPhones designed from the ground up for Apple Intelligence and its groundbreaking capabilities,” said Cook. Apple Intelligence is a system that bundles AI features that can be used across all Apple devices.

The company announced this and a new partnership with AI pioneer OpenAI at its developer conference in June. Generative AI refers to the technical capabilities of creating content such as text, images, music and videos.

New iPhone 16 from Apple: New features for users

In a first step, the AI ​​functions will be able to recommend answers to emails received by iPhone users. The voice assistant Siri will also become more powerful on Apple’s new iPhone, as it will be able to answer more complicated questions and, for example, find a photo that the user describes to it verbally.

In the second quarter of 2024, Apple generated sales of $39 billion (€35.16 billion) with its iPhones, which corresponds to around 60 percent of the group’s total sales. Its biggest competitor is the South Korean Samsung Group. The global market leader has already released smartphone models that work with generative AI.

The Apple Watch is also getting a new series, apart from the new iPhone 16 from Apple. Ten years after the first announcement, Apple is giving its computer watch a facelift. The Apple Watch is noticeably thinner and has larger displays. A more powerful new chip should enable the Apple Watch Series 10 to automatically display selected information when you need it. A new function for the Apple Watch is the detection of sleep apnea – a condition in which breathing can stop briefly.

To ensure that you can wear the watch for longer, 30 minutes of charging should fill the battery to 80 percent. So far, many users charge the watch overnight. The new Apple Watch will also be able to detect water temperature and depth.

The Apple Watch was introduced in September 2014 and went on sale in spring 2015. Since then, Apple has been leading the smartwatch market – although recently Chinese manufacturers in particular have been able to catch up a little.
