Launch of Apple Intelligence announced

At WWDC 2024, Apple announced its own artificial intelligence, “Apple Intelligence,” which was developed in collaboration with ChatGPT from OpenAI. As part of the event to launch the iPhone 16, the company now announced the official launch date of the new software.

Launch in the USA from October

According to Apple, “Apple Intelligence” will be released in October together with iOS/iPadOS 18.1 and macOS 15.1. However, the service will initially only be available in the USA and only in English – and not with the full range of functions that was originally announced. In December, Apple plans to expand the service to Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa and the United Kingdom. Support for Chinese, French, Japanese and Spanish will then follow in 2025. It is noticeable that German is currently missing from this list. However, given the global spread of the languages mentioned, this is hardly surprising. Users in the European Union, however, will remain excluded from Apple Intelligence for an indefinite period of time. Apple justifies this with concerns about data protection, which is particularly strictly regulated in the EU by the GDPR – which in some cases can also be to the detriment of users.

Comment: Users show incomprehension – rightly so?

Although the Apple event was only a few hours ago, numerous users, especially on social media, are already expressing massive incomprehension. Many are drawing comparisons to Google’s AI application Gemini, which is also available on the new Pixel 9 models in the EU. However, it remains to be seen whether Google and other companies will be affected by regulations in the long term.

Some users are even demanding that Apple be “punished” by boycotting the new devices and keeping their old device instead. But no matter which manufacturer it is, you should think carefully about whether such a waiver is justified. Personally, I can do without Apple Intelligence, despite the supported hardware, because the service in its current form does not offer me any significant added value.
