iPhone 16 introduced: New features and plenty of colors

The cat is finally out of the bag: Apple has just introduced the iPhone 16 series. In addition to richer colors, this time it also brings more changes than in previous generations. The jump is good, but in the EU it comes with a big asterisk.

iPhone 16 – what’s new

A lot of information about the iPhone 16 was already known in advance, so none of the new features are really surprising if you’ve been keeping an eye on the rumor mill over the past few months.

New colors

The iPhone has been as colorful as a rainbow for a few generations, but in recent years it has become increasingly pale. With the iPhone 16, richer colors are returning to the basic models: ultramarine (blue), teal, and pink. The plastics have not dropped quite as low as recently seen in the leaks. As always, there is also a black and a white option.

Action button

Just as the iPhone 15 inherited the Dynamic Island from the iPhone 14 Pro (Max), the iPhone 16 now inherits the Action button from the iPhone 15 Pro (Max). The button replaces the switch that previously let you mute your iPhone and brings more flexibility. You can assign a variety of functions to the flavor, including entire shortcuts.

New camera

Unofficially confirmed for a long time, now finally officially confirmed: The cameras are again arranged vertically, as they were on the iPhone 12, and the fast square base shrinks to an elongated oval. The new arrangement serves as a link to the Apple Vision Pro, as it can be used to record stereoscopic videos – spatial videos for Apple’s spatial computer.

There are also small changes to the cameras themselves: The main camera uses a 48 MP sensor and a lens with a focal length of 24 mm. If you reduce the image to a 12 MP section in the middle, you get a (virtual) telephoto lens with 2x zoom and a focal length of 52 mm.

The other is an ultra-wide-angle camera with a 13 mm focal length and an f/2.2 aperture. In the iPhone 16, it learns autofocus and can now also take macro photos and videos.

Camera control

Matching the new camera there is still a new taste or a new control: camera control. It is located on the right side below the other taste and serves to quickly start the camera and as a two-stage shutter release like on a classic camera. A first press focuses on the subject, a second press takes the photo.

It is a capacitive button with haptic feedback – similar to the home button on the iPhone SE. In this respect, it is also considered a touch surface with which you can change various settings in the camera – zoom, white balance, etc.

Larger battery

Apple said at the presentation that the battery has increased in both basic models. Together with increased efficiency and the resulting power consumption, the battery life should therefore be significantly extended. How long? The company did not provide any information on this at the presentation – not even the well-known “All-Day Battery Life”.

Price & Availability

Even if the launch date changes, one thing is always certain: pre-sales begin on the Friday after the presentation, and the new iPhone goes on sale one week later.
