School authority sees positive trend in teaching provision in the districts of Lörrach and Waldshut – District of Lörrach

Start of the school year

The Lörrach State Schools Authority described the provision of lessons at the start of the new school administration as good. There is a positive trend in new recruitment, thanks in part to the substitute teachers for many schools.

On Monday, the Lörrach State School Office reported a positive trend in new hires in a communication on teaching provision in the Lörrach and Waldshut districts at the start of the 2024/25 school year. As reported, 165 new teachers were hired in the area of responsibility of the Lörrach School Office.

On Monday, 131 schools in the Waldshut and Lörrach districts in the Lörrach school district started the new school year. The school district welcomed 15,093 students in the primary schools, 1,312 in the vocational secondary schools, 6,074 in the community schools (some of which have a primary level in conjunction), 8,628 in the secondary schools and 1,145 in the special education and advisory centers. This included 1,159 students who were taught in language preparation classes (VKL). A further 149 students were taught in the primary school support classes. In the primary schools, vocational secondary schools, community schools and secondary schools, 320 students are being taught in an inclusive education program.

165 new hires

“We are very pleased,” says the statement from the deputy head of the Lörrach State School Office, Regina Höfler, “that we have been able to make 165 new appointments for the types of schools in our area of responsibility for the coming school year.” Despite the ongoing challenge in supplying the secondary schools and the special education and counseling centers in particular, it was “able to quickly and completely ensure the supply of the primary schools,” even though some primary schools will be starting more classes for the next school year.

The announcement states that the provision of teaching at many schools has been kept stable for the coming school year through a future extension or new recruitment of substitute teachers (people without teaching qualifications). Ensuring that schools are supplied with certain specialist requirements or class teachers is also possible through a high proportion of secondments of existing teachers and thus through a redistribution of the available resources in all types of schools.

Short-term outages remain a challenge

Covering teachers for short-term absences, such as those due to illness or maternity leave, “some of which we have already received or will receive in the current school year, remains a major challenge, as there is no reserve for cases of illness and we are still looking for teachers here in order to be able to react quickly in the event of absences.

The establishment of split lessons, support measures or voluntary working groups that go beyond the specified contingent timetable cannot be offered at all school locations. In the coming school year, one of the school authority’s main focuses will be the development of lessons in schools by making target and performance agreements with the school management. The “Start Opportunities” program will enable seven schools in the school authority district to be given new impetus: five schools in the Lörrach district and two schools in the Waldshut district.

Learning with tailwind

The “Learning with Tailwind” support program is an important support system for schools in the school district. Thanks to this program, many schools can continue to employ support staff who work individually with students in small groups.
