All information, leaks & speculations at a glance

In this article we summarize for you all important information and speculations about the Nintendo Switch 2 If new leaks or official details become known, we will update this post.

About the Nintendo Switch

The Nintendo Switch is the successor to the Wii U and was released in early March 2017. The Switch is a hybrid console that can be used as a stationary console with an external screen and as a portable handheld console.

  • Nintendo Switch Lite: On September 20, 2019, Nintendo released a second model, the Switch Lite, which is significantly smaller, lighter and cheaper than the standard model. The Switch Lite cannot be connected to an external screen, which means it can only be used as a handheld console.
  • Nintendo Switch: At the beginning of October 2021, the Nintendo Switch OLED, the third model in the Nintendo Switch product line, was released. It has a larger 7-inch OLED screen, a continuously adjustable stand, a docking station with LAN port, 64 GB of internal storage space and speakers with better audio quality.

The Nintendo Switch 2

Fans have been waiting for the Nintendo Switch 2 as the successor model for a long time. Rumors and speculations have been circulating on the Internet for years. Players want technical improvements and new functions. However, Nintendo has not yet released any official information about the Switch 2.

How much does the Nintendo Switch 2 cost?

There are rumors about two models: a cheaper digital model for about $400 and a more expensive model with a cartridge slot for about $449

When will the Nintendo Switch 2 be released?

The unveiling is expected in 2024. There are increasing reports of a timely announcement of the Switch 2. These are based primarily on the statement of the usually well-informed industry expert Christopher Dring from Gamesindustry. According to him, the new Nintendo console could be officially unveiled as early as September:

“There is a rumor in the industry that this month.” Something is going to happen related to the Switch 2. I thought I reminded everyone of the official list of the greatest gaming consoles of all time.

1. Nintendo Switch
2. All others

The release is currently expected for the first quarter of 2025. According to reports, Nintendo originally planned a release in late 2024. However, in order to avoid product defects and at the same time ensure that sufficient stocks are available for a smooth release, the date was apparently pushed back internally.

Will the Nintendo Switch 2 be backwards compatible?

Many suspect that the Switch 2 could be backwards compatible, similar to previous Nintendo consoles. Insider Nate the Hate spoke out on Reddit. According to him, the Switch 2 will indeed have such functionality.

For many Switch owners, backwards compatibility is certainly one of the most important features for a successor. After all, it would also allow physical and digital games from the current Nintendo Switch to be played.

What special features are expected?

There is speculation about improved controllers in the form of magnetic Joy-Coas well as additional buttons and HD Rumble for better haptic feedback.

The new mounting system is intended to increase durability and ease of use compared to the current rail system. Nintendo is also said to have thought about how to avoid stick drifts with the new controllers. It is possible that they will use analog sticks with Hall effect.

The return of the popular Street Pass feature was discussed. This allows data to be exchanged automatically, for example by simply walking past another user on the street or visiting a StreetPass contact point.

Which games will be available on the Nintendo Switch 2?

It is expected that many of the current Switch games will also run on the new console, and that future AAA titles will take advantage of the Switch 2’s new hardware capabilities. Traditionally, the launch of the new console could be celebrated with the release of a new Zelda or Mario game. However, this is not the case because corresponding titles in these series were released not so long ago.

Technical specifications

4K support: The console could feature upscaling technology from Nvidia (DLSS) to enable 4K resolution, which is particularly interesting for gaming in docked mode. Native 4K displays are less likely, however.

Nvidia T239 chip: It is rumored that the Switch 2 will use the Nvidia T239 chip, which could provide a significant performance boost over the current Switch.

Screen and graphics

There are reports that the console will continue to use an LCD display to keep costs down, similar to the original Switch. It will be an 8-inch LCD screen with a resolution of 1080p. 4K resolution would therefore only be available in docked mode.

Features like ray tracing could be possible, which would take the visual experience to a new level.

Development kits

Reports have already been in the hands of major partner studios, which could indicate an imminent reveal. At Gamescom 2023, Nintendo is said to have shown some of the new hardware features to select developers and media.

Will the Nintendo Switch still be available to buy?

Nintendo has already announced that the original Nintendo Switch will continue to receive updates until at least March 2025. It can also be assumed that the console will continue to be supported by Nintendo after the release of the Switch 2.
