Texas Overtakes Ohio State

The new AP Top 25 rankings rewarded Texas with a 31-12 win over Michigan and put the Longhorns in second place behind Georgia. As a result, Ohio State was relegated to third place, even though they had been very dominant against Akron and Western Michigan and produced a total of 108-6 points. For the Longhorns, this is the highest ranking in an AP ranking since 2009 and underlines their own ambitions to be a title favorite. The experts who were eligible to vote voted clearly and recognized that Texas fought off an overwhelming crowd of over 111,000 football fans away at the Big House and was completely unimpressed by the noise. Every eligible voter, with one exception, voted for Texas to take either first, second or third place. Ohio State, on the other hand, only had to win against average teams, but has enough new opportunities to improve its ranking. The Buckeyes will still play against two top 10 teams (Oregon and Penn State) and then Ohio State also has the Michigan game on November 30th on their schedule.

Texas, on the other hand, will not play against any notable opponents until October 12th, when it will face Oklahoma in the traditional Red River duel. Co-favorite Georgia is once again the only top-10 opponent that will face the Horns in the regular college football season.

The AP Top 25 ranking table as of September 8, 2024:
