On Sunday, the Stuttgart Surge footballers fought a battle with Rhein Fire that lasted several hours in the pouring rain. This left its mark on the Gazi Stadium.

The Stuttgart Surge footballers had a dramatic battle with the Rhein Fire from Düsseldorf on Sunday in the Gazi Stadium on the Waldau. After three hours of constant rain, the Stuttgart team had to admit defeat in the semi-finals of the playoffs with a score of 23:29 after extra time.

The strain on the players was clearly visible after the hard-fought match in front of almost 5,000 spectators – but the fight left its mark not only on the players’ faces – the grass in the Gazi Stadium had also obviously suffered greatly.

This situation is unlikely to have caused any joy among the Stuttgarter Kickers, who are the main tenants of the stadium under the television tower. After the surface was replaced twice before and during the European Championship for the Swiss national team, which trained in Degerloch, the Blues were all the happier to be able to play on a pitch that met UEFA standards – at least until yesterday, Sunday.

“I haven’t been able to get a picture of the situation yet, but I’ve also heard that the pitch has been damaged,” said Kickers sports director Marc Stein to our editorial team on Monday. However, he is not angry about this. “Stuttgart Surge has just as much right to use the stadium as we do.” “It doesn’t belong to us,” Stein continues. He is convinced that everything will be done to repair the damage to the pitch in cooperation with the city of Stuttgart by the next regional league home game on September 21 against FSV Frankfurt.

“We always want to play on a top pitch, that is our aim,” said Stein. However, he could not resist a little dig. “It is no surprise that the pitch is no longer in top condition at some point when 40 to 50 sporting events take place in the Gazi Stadium,” said Stein. Incidentally, the Stuttgart Surge will not be guests at the Waldau this year – after the bitter semi-final exit, the competitive season is over for the footballers.
