The Upper Bavaria South Police Department has announced further checks for the start of school on September 10. The main focus is on safety in cars.

District – From Tuesday (September 10) to Friday (September 13), the police officers of the Upper Bavaria South Police Headquarters will be increasing their monitoring of compliance with the seat belt and child safety regulations, particularly in the area of schools, kindergartens and school routes.

Checks at the start of the school year: Police focus on safety

“53 people died in traffic in Bavaria in 2023 because they were not wearing seat belts, including a child.” “That is why the protection of the youngest is a top priority for the police,” explains the police headquarters.

According to the police, almost one in four car occupants (24.2 percent) who lost their lives in traffic last year were not adequately secured. “In the current year 2024, by the end of April, eleven people have already lost their lives because they were riding in vehicles without safety equipment.”

At the start of the new school year, the Upper Bavaria South Police Department is particularly concerned about the youngest road users, it explains. “That is why the police officers from the stations in southern Upper Bavaria will be monitoring compliance with the seat belt and child safety regulations from September 10 to 13, especially in the area of schools, kindergartens and busy school routes.”

Police ask for consideration for children in traffic

The number of accidents on the way to school remained the same in 2023 as in 2022, at 65 cases, but the number of students injured rose from 66 to 77. “Even though fortunately no child died on the way to school in southern Upper Bavaria in 2023, the excessive number of accidents on the way to school clearly shows how important it is to support children and ensure that their journey to school is as safe as possible,” the police explained.

A task that requires not only road users but also parents, schools and security authorities. The police are therefore appealing to all road users, especially at the start of the school year, to be particularly considerate and to be prepared for unexpected behaviour from children in traffic at any time.

This applies especially on school routes, in residential areas and at stops around schools and kindergartens. “As parents, be a good example, use your seatbelt and ensure that your children are properly secured on every journey,” the police ask.
