Delhi’s Rouse Avenue Court on Monday (September 9) remanded AAP MP Amanatullah Khan to 14-day judicial remand in an alleged money laundering incident committed by him during his tenure as chairman of the Delhi Waqf Board. The court in its order remanded the AAP Okhla MP to judicial remand till September 23 after he was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on September 2. “Remanded till September 23,” Special Judge Rakesh Syal of the Rouse Avenue Court said in his order.

Significantly, the Delhi court passed this order after the ED argued that the accused did not need to be further remanded in custody and sought his transfer to judicial custody.

The ED informed the court that if released, Khan could influence witnesses and obstruct the investigation and therefore remand may be necessary. They also noted that Khan had been uncooperative during his previous remand.

Meanwhile, Khan’s lawyer had opposed the ED’s request and requested the court to release his client, stating that the judge can impose any necessary conditions. However, after the hearing, Khan was remanded in judicial custody.

AAP and BJP argue over the arrest of Amanatullah Khan

It is important to note that a huge uproar ensued after Khan’s arrest on September 2. According to reports, the ED team that came to the AAP MP’s house for investigation was initially denied entry. However, when paramilitary forces arrived, Khan opened the gates and the ED initiated its search. After hours of investigation, Khan was finally taken into custody on September 2 under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).

Significantly, the ED investigation saw a political war of words between AAP and BJP. AAP MP Sanjay Singh criticised the central government and the ED, accusing them of acting without evidence. In a video posted on X (formerly Twitter), Singh said, “There is no evidence against Amanatullah Khan, but both Modi’s dictatorship and ED’s hooliganism continue.” On the other hand, Delhi BJP chief Virendra Sachdeva criticised the AAP for its “long list of corrupt” individuals and alleged that Khan was involved in the Delhi Waqf Board corruption case.
