Apple’s secret plan for September 9th

Today Apple is presenting the new iPhone 16 – that much is already certain. But is there perhaps more? Which other product announcements are likely, which are less likely? The current state of rumors provides some clarity. Apple will definitely not be satisfied with the iPhone 16 alone.

Apple event: Not just the iPhone 16

Date and time are known. Apple is hosting a special event on September 9th and everyone knows that there will be new iPhones to see. But is that all? Probably not. Here is a brief summary of products that we are most likely to be presented with:

iPhone16: Apple will once again be introducing four new models. The two Pro variants are likely to attract particular attention. Their screens and casings will be slightly larger. 6.1 will become 6.3 inches and 6.7 will become 6.9 inches. This year, all variants will have the action button of the iPhone 15 Pro (Max) and a new recording button on the side will be added. This moves the iPhone 16 a step closer to a “real” photo and video camera.

Apple Watch Series 10: The new Watch 10 may be based on an “Apple Watch X” – after all, Apple introduced the world’s first Apple Watch on September 9, 2014. But apart from a slimmer case, you shouldn’t expect too much from the possible anniversary model.

Apple Watch Series 3: The 3rd generation of the Apple Watch Ultra is likely to be even more boring. There have been hardly any reports about it so far. However, apart from an update under the hood, there are unlikely to be any really visible innovations.

AirPods 4: The launch of the fourth generation of AirPods is also considered fairly certain. There will be two versions, so that they can replace the older AirPods 2 and the current AirPods 3 at the same time.

These announcements are in jeopardy

We are still unsure about the following new products:

Apple Watch SE: A new smartwatch for beginners is due to be released, but it is not certain yet. Recently there has been speculation about a cheaper plastic version, but will we see it yet? Nobody knows at the moment.

iPad mini 7 and iPad 11: New iPad models are also expected, as none of the current models are compatible with “Apple Intelligence”. But there is no guarantee that Apple will show the successor to the smallest and cheapest iPad at the same time as the iPhone 16. Another event or a quiet announcement in the course of the fall is more likely.

No more chance for September 9

You shouldn’t expect any further product announcements on September 9th. They will either come later in the year or in 2025 at the earliest:

M4 Macs: New models of the MacBook Pro, Mac mini and iMac with the new M4 chip are expected in 2024. But Apple will introduce these separately, either in October or November.

AirPods Pro 3, new HomePods: Apart from the AirPods 4, Apple is unlikely to introduce any new headphones in 2024. We also won’t see any new smart speakers, possibly with a display, at least not in September.

Cheapest Apple Vision Headset: The Apple Vision Pro is not exactly a success. All of Apple’s hopes are therefore resting on a cheaper version of the “spatial computer”. But that will not come until the end of 2025 at the earliest, or perhaps not until the year after next. Neither a topic for the iPhone keynote nor for this year in general.
