Fan injured in attack after women’s match in Gladbach

After a DFB Cup match between FC Köln and Borussia Mönchengladbach, a Cologne fan had to be taken to hospital. He was allegedly attacked on his way to the train.

The DFB Cup match between FC Women and Borussia Mönchengladbach on Sunday afternoon not only ended with an unfortunate 7:8 defeat in the penalty shootout for the Billy Goats team. For one Billy Goats fan, the trip to Gladbach’s Grenzlandstadion even ended in hospital. The reason for this is said to have been an attack by opposing fans.

According to Geissblog information, the man was on his way to the train when he was physically attacked by two Gladbach fans. His FC scarf was stolen during the attack and his glasses were damaged. He also suffered a cut on his eye, which is why he was taken to hospital for further examinations after the police and emergency services were notified.

When asked by Geissblog, the Mönchengladbach police finally confirmed early on Sunday evening that a crime had been committed during the game and that the operation on site was still ongoing. The police did not provide any details.

The FC fan club “1. Frauenfanclub Rut Wiess” has also commented on Facebook about the incident surrounding the women’s team’s cup duel. “Unfortunately, we had to go through a really bad and sad experience today after the DFB Cup match. One of our members was attacked and beaten up by two Gladbach fans on the way to the train after the match. All because of a scarf,” wrote the Billy Goats’ supporters there.

The group also warns other FC fans about future encounters with Gladbach. “Do us a favor: If you have to go home by car, train or on foot after a game, ideally never go alone, but in a group. That reduces the risk considerably.”

Borussia Mönchengladbach and 1. FC Köln are considered arch rivals, but there have been no disputes between the different fan groups in the past around women’s team games. However, according to Geissblog, on Sunday for the first time several members of the active fan scene from Mönchengladbach were on site in and around the Grenzlandstadion.

The attackers have not yet been identified.
