Jannik Sinner and Taylor Fritz meet in the men’s final of the US Open, with the world number 1 facing both the American number 1 and an enthusiastic crowd.

Sinner, who was cleared of any wrongdoing by an independent tribunal after testing positive for the banned clostebol in March, beat Britain’s Jack Draper in a heated semi-final and can win his second Grand Slam title tonight after winning the Australian Open in January.

Fritz beat fellow American Frances Tiafoe in the semifinals and reached the first Grand Slam final of his career. The 26-year-old had to hold back tears as he processed his success. “That’s why I do what I do. That’s why I work so hard,” said Fritz about the chance to become a Grand Slam champion. “I’m in the final of the US Open.”

Taylor Fritz has the chance to end the 21-year wait for an American men’s US Open winner, but will face world number one Jannik Sinner in the final in New York.

Fritz defeated fellow countryman Frances Tiafoe in five sets to become the first man to reach the US Open final since Andy Roddick in 2006. He is now just one win away from repeating Roddick’s victory from 2003.

Sinner, however, is the ultimate challenge, as the Italian won his first Grand Slam title at the Australian Open earlier this year and has won 13 matches on hard courts in the majors.

Sinner defeated Britain’s Jack Draper in a dramatic semi-final on Friday night, but there were concerns for the 23-year-old after he fell on his left wrist and required medical treatment.

Fritz, who reached his first Grand Slam final at the age of 26, has already met Sinner twice. Sinner won the last meeting in 2023 in Indian Wells, while Fritz secured victory at the same tournament in 2021.
