Cyclassics Hamburg: Falls and injuries at the amateur race

At the Cyclassics in Hamburg, the largest one-day race in Germany, there were several crashes in the amateur cycling race, including the last one. The amateur race over 100 kilometers had to be interrupted in the Pinneberg district, the police announced. The field was stopped. In addition to ambulances, rescue helicopters were also deployed.

According to a Cyclassics spokeswoman, at least six cyclists were injured in two crashes. All of those affected are conscious. The amateur race is to be finished in a neutralized manner – without timekeeping. More than 10,000 amateur cyclists were expected to attend the Cyclassics in Hamburg.

Professional race delayed and shortened

The accident also affected the World Tour professional race. According to the spokeswoman, the start, which was scheduled for late morning, was postponed by 45 minutes. In addition, the race through Hamburg, which was actually almost 200 kilometers long, was shortened by 21 kilometers. Many German professionals are also taking part, including Pascal Ackermann and Georg Zimmermann.

The Cyclassics in Hamburg are, alongside the one-day race Eschborn-Frankfurt, one of two races in Germany with UCI World Tour status.
