CBI notes serious lapses in initial investigation

Calcutta: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) officials are investigating the rape and murder of the doctor from RG Kar Medical College & Hospital Here they now focus on the reasons for the serious lapses in conducting the first investigation before it took over the case on the orders of the Calcutta High Court.

According to sources, officials at the central agency believe that their investigation process could have been much smoother if these lapses had been avoided during the first investigation before the CBI took over the reins.

The first mistake, according to sources, was that the victim’s autopsy was inadequately recorded on video and the wounds on the body were not mentioned in the report.

The forensic experts assisting the CBI team in the investigation pointed out that the language used in the autopsy report was quite amateurish and “concealed” rather than revealed the relevant details, the sources added.

The second aspect, the sources added, is the CBI officials’ assessment that a second post-mortem of the victim’s body would have been extremely helpful in the investigation process as it would have brought to light more details.

In this context, the investigators are trying to find out from the victim’s family members and their close confidants the circumstances under which the body was hastily cremated.

According to sources, this aspect of the investigation has become extremely important in the backdrop of allegations by the victim’s parents that their request for the preservation of their daughter’s body was completely ignored by the administration officials.

By questioning the victim’s family members and close associates, the CBI officials are trying to get details of the administrative and political figures who had gathered at their residence and crematorium before the cremation.

A crucial hearing into the gruesome rape and murder is scheduled in the Supreme Court on Monday. The CBI is expected to submit its progress report on the investigation into the case on the occasion.
