Heavy rains in Koraput, Odisha state, major rivers flood; several areas experience flooding

The persistent rain for the past few days has brought life to a standstill in many parts of Koraput district. According to reports, the river Kolab has burst its banks due to the torrential rains and the water is flowing over the bridge near Digapur. As a result, the road link from Kundura to Ghumar is disrupted.

Low-lying areas of the region have been flooded and water has entered many houses, causing considerable inconvenience to residents.

The Kurlu and Biri rivers in Kundura block are also reportedly in flood, posing a threat of flooding in the surrounding areas. Due to the heavy rains, several places in Kundura and Kotpad blocks are inundated as excess rainwater has accumulated on the roads. Several houses have also been damaged in the process.

Moreover, several hectares of agricultural land were inundated in Baipariguda area, destroying paddy and vegetable cultivation. Baipariguda block received the highest rainfall in the district at 170 mm, followed by Kundura and Jeypore blocks.

With the IMD predicting more rain in the coming days, the situation may worsen further. The district administration has asked the people to stay put and farmers have been advised not to enter their fields for the next few days.
