28 euros instead of 0 euros: Lufthansa cancels free service for passengers

As of August 13, 2024, Lufthansa’s seat selection at check-in for long-haul flights is no longer free. This rule previously applied to the cheapest fare (Economy Light) on long-haul flights, after it had already been abolished on short- and medium-haul flights.

The change affects not only Lufthansa flights itself, but also those of its partner companies Swiss and Austrian Airlines. Customers who book the “Economy Light” fare will now automatically be assigned a seat at check-in. If this seat does not meet the passenger’s wishes, a fee of at least 28 euros must be paid to choose another seat. Only frequent flyers with a high status, such as Senator status, can continue to choose their seat free of charge.
