“We lost an incredible teammate last night. Although Avery was with us for only a short time, she had a positive impact on her unit, her varsity team and her class. Her loss will be felt throughout USAFA,” said Lt. Gen. Tony Bauernfeind, head of the U.S. Air Force Academy.

According to her parents, Koonce brought an incredibly bright light into this broken world.

“Our lives will forever be diminished by her absence. Avery is truly loved by so many. We have peace in knowing that Avery is in the arms of her Heavenly Father and we will be with her again. Avery was not a perfect person, but she was a perfect daughter,” her family said.

Her family continued, “We are overjoyed for the 19 wonderful years we were able to call Avery ours. We pray for all who must endure the incredible darkness of her loss.”
