Play based on the novel by Bernhard Schlink In a stage adaptation by Mirjam Neidhart

“The layers of our lives lie so closely together that we always encounter earlier things in later life, not as things that have been put aside and settled, but as present and alive.”

THE READER

The reader remembers his first great love. He is a student, she is more than twice his age. Soon they have a daily ritual: reading aloud, showering, making love and lying together for a while. The taciturn Hanna is a good listener. Michael grows up in her arms. She won’t let him go for a long time, even if she suddenly disappears from the city after a few months. Years later, Michael meets her again completely unexpectedly in another city. At a Nazi trial that he attended, now a law student. Hanna is in the dock as a former concentration camp guard. But there is something else that she has kept secret. When Michael discovers Hanna’s second big secret, he falls into a deep inner conflict…

This story, which the writer and lawyer Bernhard Schlink tells us in clear language, is stirring and touching. It is also far removed from any good-evil scheme. Instead, it raises even more questions that illuminate the relationship between love, guilt and shame in a sensible and exciting way. Because how do you meet a loved one again who has taken on such great guilt? And how do you remember yours? These are also the questions of an entire generation.

A masterpiece of international standing that can unfold its full power in the theatre through the dramatic form of remembering.
