The search for former RAF terrorists Burkhard Garweg and Ernst-Volker Staub is still ongoing. The police have now found previously unknown video files from Garweg.

The arrest of Daniela Klette also gives investigators new tools in their search for Burkhard Garweg. Two video recordings of Garweg were discovered in the former RAF terrorist’s apartment, which will now be used in the search for the terrorist who is still on the run. The investigators are hoping for new clues about the man who has been in hiding for decades.

The Lower Saxony State Office of Criminal Investigation confirmed this to the DPA. “We will renew our public relations work next week,” said a spokesman for the news agency. The authorities want to publish an excerpt from a video and screenshots from another, “Spiegel” first reported.

According to the magazine, the clips were found in Klette’s apartment. According to “Spiegel”, the officers hope to gain new information from one aspect of the clips in particular: one of the recordings is said to contain a sentence spoken by Garweg. The investigators now hope to reveal that someone might recognize the wanted man’s voice.

Accordingly, the section of the video is to be used for the search. Only screenshots of the second clip are to be published. However, the information gained here is less: a recent photo of Garweg, which showed him with two dogs in Klette’s apartment, had already been used for the search.

The clip with the spoken sentence was “most likely shot in Berlin,” the Lower Saxony State Criminal Police Office told DPA. According to the Spiegel report, the second clip comes from Hildesheim. The group attempted to rob a supermarket there in 2016.

Still on the run

Garweg, Klette and Ernst-Volker Staub were part of the so-called third generation of the Red Army Faction. The left-wing extremist group had murdered more than 30 people since its founding in 1968 before finally disbanding in 1998. In the spring, Klette was unexpectedly arrested in her apartment in Berlin, and the home of Garweg, who lived under a cover identity called “Martin”, was also searched, but he fled after being warned. Garweg and Staub are still on the run.
