Apple Watch launch on Monday: Sleep apnea in the thinner Series 10 and the new SE

In a few days, three new Apple Watches are expected to be introduced. While the Apple Watch Ultra is expected to bring new features, the Watch Series 10 is expected to have some changes, such as reduced detection of sleep apnea. A new Apple Watch SE is also expected to be introduced.

This means that Apple will be renewing its entire smartwatch portfolio in just a few days, after the current Apple Watch SE has been on the market since 2022. However, the focus will probably be on the new Apple Watch Series 10 and thus the “standard” model.

Apple Watch Series 10

According to earlier rumors, this model will have a new design, which is primarily characterized by a larger screen and a significantly thinner casing. It is intended to chase the larger display of the Apple Watch Ultra, but the watch will not have the same bulky dimensions. A new SiP and thus more processor power are also expected.

In a recent report by BloombergHowever, Mark Gurman goes a step further and has learned that Apple will introduce sleep apnea detection via smartwatch for the Series 10. Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder that causes repeated pauses in breathing during sleep.

On the other hand, the detection of high blood pressure was not successful; this function is still under development. A major redesign, which has been discussed for years, is also unlikely, so the tenth Apple Watch will be introduced exactly ten years after the first series, but will probably not have an iPhone X moment.

Apple Watch SE2024

The smaller star of the show, however, could be a new Apple Watch SE, which, according to recent rumors, will be aimed even more at children with brighter colors and a plastic case. The Watch SE is the cheapest entry into the iPhone manufacturer’s smartwatch ecosystem, but in return it also has fewer functions. Since the SiP of the SE has always been the same as that of its high-priced brothers, a plastic case is also a way for Apple to lower the price without sacrificing new software features or long-term updates.

Apple Watch Series 3

The third generation Apple Watch Ultra could have significantly less screen time, and apart from the SiP and probably the detection of sleep apnea like in the Series 10, it will not receive any new innovations. A larger display, a thinner case or even a new dark titanium case as a color choice are not currently up for debate in the rumor mill.

No “AI” to be expected for Apple Watch

As Gurman summarizes, no new AI features are expected for any of the new models, as Apple Intelligence (AI) remains exclusive to iPhone, iPad and Mac for the time being. This means that the smartwatches potentially fall behind the new Pixel Watch 3 and Galaxy Watch 7 (test), which were released this summer with new AI features.

Presentation on Monday at “Glowtime”

The presentation of all three new watches is expected next Monday from 7 p.m. German time, when Apple starts its “It’s Glowtime” event (overview). The new iPhone 16 and the fourth generation of AirPods are also expected.
