The “Saw” creator brings a horror icon back to the cinema: First trailer for “Wolf Man” – Cinema News

With “The Invisible Man,” “Saw” and “Insidious” co-creator Leigh Whannell has already successfully reinvented an iconic horror character. He will now repeat this success with “Wolf Man.” The teaser trailer provides a scary foretaste:

Some of you will remember: Following the example of Disney and Marvel’s mega-successful MCU, the Universal studio had planned to set up a large new blockbuster universe with interconnected remakes of the company’s iconic movie monsters and with many superstars (Tom Cruise, Johnny Depp, Russell Crowe, Javier Bardem …). But after the disappointing performance of “The Mummy” with Tom Cruise, the so-called Dark Universe was buried again.

Instead, they are planning independent reboots that will be smaller and actually more horror-oriented. And it was precisely this change that ultimately turned out to be a stroke of luck, as the 2020 remake of “The Invisible Man”, produced for just seven million dollars, was not only a genre entry worth seeing, but also a worldwide hit with box office earnings of 144 million dollars.

So it’s no wonder that the next revival of a Universal monster is once again turning to the man behind this success. Horror Expert Leigh Whannell (“Saw”, “Insidious”, “Upgrade”) is now also available at “WolfMan“, a reinterpretation of the classic “The Wolf Man“ from 1941, was responsible for the direction.

Produced by Ryan Gosling

Christopher Abbott (“The Sinner”, “Poor Things”) will play the title role of the werewolf who goes from being his family’s protector to becoming their worst nightmare after being bitten by a mysterious creature. Dwayne Johnson was considered for the role during the Dark Universe era, and Ryan Gosling was initially supposed to take on the part during the later overhaul. Gosling even pitched an idea for the film himself and is probably still on board as a producer alongside Leigh Whannell and genre expert Jason Blum.

The cast also includes “The Handmaid’s Tale” star Sam Jaeger and Emmy and Golden Globe-winning “Ozark” scene-stealer Julia Garner. “Wolf Man” will be released in German cinemas on January 16, 2025. In the same year, Universal’s competitor Warner will also be reviving a classic monster with a lot of prominent support. You can find out more about it here:
