Republicans focus on planned electric vehicle battery factory in Michigan to attack swing state Democrats over China

BIG RAPIDS, Michigan — Last fall, voters angered by plans to build an electric vehicle battery factory in their rural central Michigan community turned their anger on the town council that supported the project, ousting five of the seven council members in a recall election.

It could have been all seven, said Lori Brock, a local real estate agent who helped lead the effort. But two members resigned early. “They knew they would be recalled,” she said.

Back then, the political debate over Gotion Inc., a U.S.-based subsidiary of a Chinese company that professes ties to the Chinese Communist Party, was more provincial, taking place in Green Charter Township and the surrounding area. Now it is playing out in the race for the White House, a confluence of two central Republican issues – the rise of China as a geopolitical adversary and the adoption of electric vehicles – in a crucial swing state.

Harris faces her “toughest” fight against Trump in Pennsylvania

The entire presidential election could depend on just one state: Pennsylvania.

And it’s shaping up to be one of the toughest battlegrounds for Harris to win.

“It’s going to be the toughest swing state,” said JJ Abbott, a Democratic strategist in the state who is working on an outside campaign to support Harris. “Of the three blue-wall states, it’s the most diverse in terms of the types of districts” a candidate must compete in to be successful.

A second Democratic official in the state simply said that the election campaign there would be “a nail-biter.”

Democrats and Republicans have spent more advertising dollars in Pennsylvania than any other swing state, underscoring its importance. Polls show the contest there is closer now than it was at this point in 2016 between Trump and Hillary Clinton or in 2020 between Trump and Joe Biden. Trump significantly outperformed the polling average in both election cycles, narrowly beating Clinton and losing to Biden by a similarly narrow margin.

Judge Juan Merchan is expected to rule today on Trump’s request to delay sentencing

The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office said in a letter to an appeals court last night that Judge Juan Merchan is expected to rule today on Trump’s lawyers’ request to delay his sentencing until after the election.

Trump was originally scheduled to attend a sentencing hearing on September 18, but the former president had asked for it to be postponed.

Preparation, pitfalls and breaking the fourth wall: lessons from a decade of Harris debates

Harris has thought long and hard about Tuesday’s debate against Trump.

“What we need is someone who can stand on the debate stage with Donald Trump and beat him by being able to prosecute the case for four more years,” the vice president said in July 2019 during a CNN debate of the Democratic presidential primary. “And I tell you, we have a long rap sheet,” she added.
