“Resurrected from the dead”: Krawietz reaches US Open final

It was an exhausting match for Kevin Krawietz from Coburg and his doubles partner Tim Pütz. Against Marcelo Arevalo and Mate Pavic (El Salvador/Croatia), the duo were very close to being eliminated in the third set of the semi-final. The scoreboard showed 2:4 and 0:40 from the German perspective in the decisive set, but Krawietz and Ütz kept their nerve, fought back and won the match 6:3, 6:7 (9:11) and 6:4.

“Fantastic match” – Krawietz reaches for third major title

“In the end, we turned our heads off and just kept playing. We rose from the dead again,” said Pütz after the semi-final in New York. “It was a fantastic match,” summed up Krawietz from Upper Franconia. The relief was evident in both of them after winning the match point: Krawietz hugged his doubles partner tightly and received a stroke through his hair in return.

It is the doubles team’s first participation in a major final. Krawietz has already won the French Open twice, but back then with his long-time partner Andreas Mies, from whom he separated at the end of 2022 and finally found a new companion in Pütz.

Final match: Tips from former partner Mies?

Now the two are aiming for their first title in a major tournament. To do so, they must beat the Australians Max Purcell and Jordan Thompson in the final on Saturday evening (probably 6 p.m. CET). The duo have been extremely confident in the tournament so far, defeating the top-seeded pairing of Marcel Granollers (Spain) and Horacio Ceballos (Argentina) in the quarterfinals and only losing one set in five matches.

It was against Krawietz’s long-time companions Mies and his new partner John Patrick-Smith that Purcell/Thompson were brought to the brink of defeat. Perhaps Mies has a few tips that will make Krawietz’s path to the third Grand Slam title of his career easier.
