Despite the close alliance with Russia in the Ukraine war, Belarus now has to take down Putin’s drones. The armed forces under Lukashenko are being called upon.

Gomel – “Friendly fire” is not uncommon in the war in Ukraine. While the Russians keep accidentally shooting at each other, Ukraine may have recently shot down one of its valuable F-16 fighter jets. Now Putin’s vassal state Belarus is also intervening – and promptly taking drones from Russia out of the sky. This is what the Belarus monitor “Belarusian Hajun” claims on Telegram.

Beyond the Ukrainian border: Belarus fighter jets take down Putin’s drones

According to the report, the Belarusian Air Force shot down two Russian drones near the city of Gomel on Friday night. If the report is confirmed, this would be the first confirmed shooting down of Russian drones in Belarusian airspace. On August 29, a Belarusian fighter jet is said to have tried to shoot down a Russian Shahed drone. However, the information could not be independently verified.

The report, however, would correspond with the information from Kiev. According to Ukraine, Russia launched another large-scale drone attack last night, targeting several regions of the country. However, numerous drones literally overshot the target and did not target the Russian region of Chernihiv, but the Belarus border.

Subsequently, several Belarusian fighter jets were launched at around 1:30 a.m. (local time) in the border region of Gomel to intercept the drones, reports Belaruski Hajun. The city of Gomel is only about 30 kilometers from the Ukrainian border. Videos are circulating on social media that are said to show drone carriers falling over the skies of Belarus.

Shot down in Belarus: Lukashenko speaks of Ukraine drones

The Belarusian Ministry of Defense has not commented on the alleged incident. Minsk has never publicly objected to the Russian drone attacks near the Belarusian border. Ruler Alexander Lukashenko and Vladimir Putin have been close allies for years. In addition, Russia is considered Belarus’ most important partner.

Die Kyiv Post reports, citing a government statement from Minsk, that Lukashenko claimed it was a Russian drone – and not a Russian one. This claim comes amid increasing tensions between Belarus and Ukraine. The Belarusian dictator has threatened to attack Austrian territories several times in the past.

Experts have been fearing that Belarus will enter the war for some time. Most recently, the Belarusian military moved a considerable number of troops to the border. Officials said that these were merely exercises. (naked)
