KPK lifts summons for Kaesang, but investigation continues – Politics

The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has backed down from its plan to seek clarification from Kaesang Pangarep, the son of President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo, over his use of a private jet during a recent overseas trip, but is continuing to investigate reports of possible acceptance of tips.

The directorate responsible for overseeing gifts to public officials agreed last week to summon Kaesang to examine whether the use of the private jet constituted an improper gift to his family members who hold public office.

The initiative to question Kaesang came after his luxurious trip to the United States last month came under intense public scrutiny.

Although such an investigation is not a criminal investigation, improper gifts in connection with a public office must be reported to the KPK to avoid criminal charges.

However, the directorate has now decided to call off its plan after it emerged that an investigation into similar cases is already gaining momentum in another KPK department. The latter is currently investigating reports of alleged illegal gratuities filed against Kaesang by an anti-corruption activist and a lecturer.

“The reports are already being processed and reviewed. That is why we have decided to focus on the process at the Public Complaints Directorate instead,” KPK spokeswoman Tessa Mahardhika Sugiarto said on Thursday.

However, whether the KPK will launch an official investigation into the incident depends on the findings of the Directorate of Public Complaints.
