Outrage on Drunk Teacher’s Day: Haircut scandal in a school in Madhya Pradesh

A public school teacher in Ratlam district of the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh threatened to suspend him on Teachers’ Day after he cut a girl’s hair while drunk, an official said.

District collector Rajesh Batham announced that a criminal case would be filed against teacher Veer Singh Medha for his misconduct. A video circulating online showed Medha cutting a child’s hair at a primary school in Semalkhedi, about 40 km from the district headquarters, which led to an altercation with a villager.

Ranjana Singh, deputy commissioner of the tribal authority, ordered Medha’s suspension after preliminary investigation and the girl’s statement confirmed the incident. The video attracted widespread attention. It shows the child crying as Medha cuts her hair while allegedly claiming that the students are not studying. The villager who intervened filmed the incident and warned Medha, leading to huge public outrage and an official intervention.
