BJP MP Mahato writes to Chief Justice of India demanding expedited trial in RG Kar Medical College rape and murder case

Calcutta (West Bengal) [India]September 5 (ANI): BJP MP for West Bengal Jyotirmoy Singh Mahato on Thursday wrote a letter to Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, urging the CJI to expedite the trial of the cases related to the rape and murder of a junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on August 9.

In his letter, Mahato wrote, “I wish to express my deepest gratitude to the Supreme Court for taking cognizance of the tragic and heinous rape and murder of a young doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata… However, I humbly request that the proceedings in this case be expedited. The delay in hearings and adjournment of the case are causing immense disappointment and frustration among the people of West Bengal and the country at large.” He also demanded that action be taken against Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Kumar Goyal and other officials for their alleged involvement in tampering with evidence and obstruction of justice.

He also accused them of “mishandling of evidence, undue haste in certain procedural issues and general lack of transparency, all of which have contributed to a growing sense of injustice.” “The role of the Kolkata Police in this case is deeply disturbing… The Commissioner of Police, Mr Vineet Kumar Goyal, has been at the centre of this controversy… His role in these cases has brought a bad name not only to the police but also to the administration of justice in West Bengal… The mishandling of evidence, undue haste in certain procedural issues and general lack of transparency have all contributed to a growing sense of injustice. In view of these concerns, I urge the Supreme Court to hold the alleged police officers, including the Commissioner of Police, and others who were involved in tampering with evidence and obstructing justice, accountable for their actions,” he added.

On August 9, the body of the junior doctor was found in the hospital’s seminar room. The incident sparked nationwide protests.

Soon after the body of the trainee doctor was discovered, a volunteer was arrested. The CBI has also arrested former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Sandip Ghosh, for alleged financial malpractice at the medical institution.

The gruesome incident also led to the West Bengal Assembly unanimously passing the Aparajita Woman and Child Bill (West Bengal Criminal Laws and Amendment) 2024 on Tuesday.

The bill proposes higher penalties for crimes against women. It stipulates that investigations into rape cases must be completed within 24 days of the first report. (ANI)
