Herrmann takes stock of the work of the border police

In the midst of the debate about the rejection of refugees at Germany’s external borders, Bavaria’s Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann and Justice Minister Georg Eisenreich (both CSU) are visiting a border control point in Burghausen today (11 a.m.). Herrmann will take stock of the work of the Bavarian border police during the on-site visit. He will also point out what he believes is a need to tighten up the measures against irregular immigration.

The Bavarian border police are a special institution in the Free State – they act in addition to the federal police and support them, especially in covert searches in border areas, but also in some cases in border controls. Prime Minister Markus Söder (CSU) recently spoke of over 100,000 hits in searches by the Bavarian border police alone.

The border between Bavaria and Austria is often used by people smugglers to bring refugees who have come to Europe via the so-called Balkan route to Germany illegally. Herrmann is of the opinion that entry into Germany is not necessary in the vast majority of cases because Austria is already a safe country and the refugees are not in danger of life and limb in other EU countries either.
