MATCH REPORT | 2024 US Open: Jack Draper’s dream run continues, De Minaur eliminated in easy sets

Jack Draper, seeded 25th, defeated Alexander De Minaur in three sets to reach the semifinals of the US Open. He won 6:3, 7:5, 6:2 in Flushing Meadows without losing a set.

The first set began with inconsistencies on both sides, especially on serves. Both players broke each other’s serve early on, but Draper managed to break twice in a row to take a 4-1 lead after about 20 minutes. Break chances came on both sides, with De Minaur fending off four break points on his own serve, but Draper eventually won the set 6-3.

Both players had a serve rate of under 50%, which led to frequent rallies in which the British No. 1 showed greater effectiveness with 12 winners compared to his opponent’s only 5. He also had a slight advantage in unforced errors with 11 compared to De Minaur’s 13.

In the second set, Draper again took an early lead with a break in the third game. After breaking his serve and leading 2-1, the Brit called the physio to bandage his right quadriceps as he was experiencing discomfort in his leg. Within minutes, he was leading 4-2. As in the first set, both players had several break chances, especially Draper, but De Minaur managed to break and win three games in a row.

However, Draper came back and won the last three games in a row to win the set 7-5. The Briton’s 69% first serves, winning 80% of them and adding another 17 winners to his tally, testified to his impeccable level.

In the final part of the match, De Minaur showed fighting spirit but could not match the level of Draper, who is more than inspired as he won 15 sets in a row at the US Open without playing a single tiebreak. Two consecutive breaks finally gave Draper the victory, 6-3, 7-5, 6-2.

The question now is whether the Brit can maintain this level in his first Grand Slam semi-final when he meets the winner of Jannik Sinner and Daniil Medvedevin and tries to emulate the success of Andy Murray.
