Free email software Thunderbird: Update closes security holes, fixes bugs

The free, open source email and calendar software Thunderbird is now available for download in version 128.2. The update fixes several newly discovered security vulnerabilities, including some with a severity rating of “high”, improves stability, and provides other bug fixes.

The fixes affect the user interface, compatibility and the display of content, among other things. Version 128.2 can now be downloaded directly from the Mozilla server and will soon be available via the program’s update function. The complete installation package will also be available on the web soon. Information about the security-related changes is available here.

Thunderbird, which runs on macOS Catalina 10.15 and later, is not only an email software with a calendar, but also a client for RSS, Usenet and chat (IRC, Google Talk, XMPP, Twitter). The free program is considered to be very robust and reliable and is characterized by many functions and setting options.

The range of functions can be flexibly expanded using a variety of add-ons. Encryption (OpenPGP), calendar, task management and a PDF viewer are included as standard. The German documentation can be found here and here.

The switch from version branch 115 to 128 was recently made. Thunderbird 128 offers many new features, but also discontinues support for macOS 10.12, macOS 10.13 and macOS 10.14. Another significant change is already in the works: in the future, new functions will be rolled out on a monthly basis instead of just once a year in a collective form as before.
