Dresden: Police arrest love scammer

Dresden: Police arrest love scammer

Dresden/Berlin – Some people make money from the nasty business of loneliness, often without knowing that they are the first and only ones to end up behind bars. Nigerian Kosiochukwu M. (23) has now had to experience this first hand.

They pretend to be attractive men or women, deliberately flirt with lonely people online and then suddenly need money: love scammers often take their victims down to the last cent. For this to work, they need accomplices who will provide their accounts and then forward the money.

One of them is said to have been Kosiochukwu M. in Berlin: “The accused was arrested today by officers of the Dresden Police Department in his apartment in Berlin on the basis of an arrest warrant already issued by the Dresden District Court in the proceedings,” said senior public prosecutor Jürgen Schmidt (49) on Wednesday.

“At the same time, searches were carried out in the accused’s apartment. Extensive evidence was seized, including documents, six telephones, an iPad and several credit cards.”

A judge disappeared from custody with no previous convictions. Together with Kira K. (24), a Ukrainian living in Pirna, he is said to have transferred a total of around 200,000 euros in 25 cases between July 11, 2022 and December 7, 2023. The people behind the scheme are said to have paid the two a commission of between 10 and 20 percent for this.

Kira M. was therefore sentenced to two years and nine months in prison by the Pirna District Court on July 25, 2024, but has appealed against this, as has the public prosecutor’s office. The investigation is ongoing.
