Get to know each other in record time with Sapphic speed dating

A special date took place on Tuesday evening as part of this year’s Pride Festival in the premises of HOSI Salzburg in the Andräviertel: a Sapphic speed dating. Under the motto “Let’s match: Speed dating and friending”, the approximately 20 participants had the opportunity to meet new people “with whom they can spend the rest of the Pride Festival or maybe even their lives”, as HOSI describes the event.

The term “Sapphic” comes from the Greek poet Sappho, who was known for love poems about women, and refers to women and feminine characters who are attracted to other women or feminine characters.

HOSI launches Sapphic speed dating and friending

These are exactly the people who were open to yesterday evening. Divided into two age groups (20 to 35 years and 30 to 45 years), each with ten people, the participants had around five minutes to get to know each other on a platonic, friendly or romantic level. The idea of doing queer speed dating and friending came about because she herself had a hard time finding friends from the community in Salzburg, as organizer Linh Bui explains in an interview with SALZBURG24.

But what do you talk about in just five minutes? “We have prepared a few ice-breaker questions in case the conversation stalls.” For example, “Would you rather go camping for three days or go to the seaside for three days?” or even the more banal “What came first – the chicken or the egg?” smiles moderator Steph Wenger.

We were there and asked the participants what they liked about speed dating and friending and what no-gos would end a date in under five minutes.
