The new NFL season is about to get underway. It will finally begin on the night of September 5th to 6th. And the season will kick off with a bang when the Baltimore Ravens visit the Kansas City Chiefs. The rematch of the AFC Championship Game is one of several prestigious and exciting season openers.

In the rematch of the famous “Fail Mary” two years ago, the Green Bay Packers were guests of Super Bowl winner Seattle. The Seahawks gave the Packers, led by Aaron Rodgers, a good beating at the start of the season, winning 36:16.

In the AFC, the duel between the Steelers and the Patriots developed into a major rivalry. In the 2015 season opener, the guests led by Ben Roethlisberger narrowly lost to Tom Brady and Co.

  • 2016 – Carolina Panthers @ Denver Broncos (20:21)

The NFL had a very special season opener in its program for the 2016 season. The duel between the Panthers and Broncos had taken place six months earlier in the Super Bowl. Just like then, the Broncos had the upper hand, even without Peyton Manning, who had retired after the final game.

  • 2017 – Kansas City Chiefs @ New England Patriots (42:27)

With 69 points, it was one of the most spectacular season openers. A freshly drafted Patrick Mahomes looks on from the sidelines as backup, as his team clearly highlights the reigning Super Bowl winners.

  • 2018 – Atlanta Falcons @ Philadelphia Eagles (12:18)

Two of the better NFC teams of the time had met in the official playoffs in the Divisional Round. The Eagles came out on top, gaining the upper hand on their way to a surprising win in the Super Bowl. Just like in the 2018 season opener.

  • 2019 – Green Bay Packers @ Chicago Bears (10:3)

To mark the NFL’s 100th anniversary, the league decided not to field the reigning Super Bowl winners. Instead, they focused on one of the oldest rivalries in American football. The game itself, however, offered little spectacle.

  • 2020 – Houston Texans @ Kansas City Chiefs (20:34)

This time, Patrick Mahomes, who has now matured into an NFL superstar and title holder, is also allowed to take part in a season opener and together with his Kansas City Chiefs he is successful. However, because the corona virus is now rampant worldwide, only around 16,000 spectators are on site

  • 2021 – Dallas Cowboys @ Tampa Bay Buccaneers (29:31)

Tom Brady is part of the season opener for the last time. The GOAT and his Tampa Bay Buccaneers win a spectacular and close game with 31:29.

  • 2022 – Buffalo Bills @ Los Angeles Rams (31:10)

    2022 – Buffalo Bills @ Los Angeles Rams (31:10)

For the first time in a long time, the defending champions have lost, and it was a really bad loss. With Buffalo winning 31:10, the Los Angeles Rams hardly have a chance.

  • 2023 – Detroit Lions @ Kansas City Chiefs (21:20)

The last season opener to date. The German-American Amon-Ra St. Brown scored the first touchdown of the 2023 NFL season. In the end, the Lions narrowly won against the favored Chiefs.
