Before the event on September 9, the new button of the iPhone 16 has leaked again

Ahead of the September iPhone event on Monday, Apple’s iPhone 16 record button has leaked again, revealing its placement and a novel solution Apple has found for its official iPhone cases.

Apple is expected to unveil a new iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 16 Pro Max on September 9, along with a new Apple Watch, AirPods, and more.

Numerous upgrades are expected, but perhaps the most notable hardware change will be the introduction of a new capture button for photos and videos, equipped with pressure sensitivity for focusing, just like on a DSLR camera. A new case leak now seems to confirm the button’s inclusion in the lineup, its placement, and the solution Apple will use for its official iPhone cases.

An image shared by well-known leaker DuanRui on X shows unspecified iPhone 16 cases that feature a slot for the alleged capture button on the right side below the iPhone’s power/lock button. While these cases feature a gap for the button, a translated caption from the leaker indicates that “Apple’s official iPhone 16 series protective case will not have this opening and will be executed in an integrated design that will not affect the normal use of this capacitive button.”

Whether this is true or not remains to be seen, but with only a few days left, we can definitely put the new record button in the “safe” category as far as iPhone leaks go.

Apple always releases its own official range of iPhone cases to complement its flagship smartphone, and it could be that support for the record button in these will come via a covered button, just like the iPhone’s other physical controls currently are. With the iPhone event just days away, we don’t have to wait much longer to find out.
