Police and fire departments in San Antonio and Alamo Heights struggled to keep up with water rescues, particularly along the Interstate 35 corridor and on a stretch of N. New Braunfels Avenue between Austin Highway and Brightwood Place.

A man who wishes to remain anonymous shared a video he filmed from inside his SUV as it was caught in the floodwaters and swept away.

The video shows water reaching his windows and rushing toward him, carrying trash cans and other debris with it.

He told KSAT 12 News that he tried to remain calm during the ordeal when he lost control of his vehicle.

As he sat in his SUV filming the scene, which included water seeping in around his feet, there was nothing he could do but wait for help from Alamo Heights firefighters.

“They put a safety vest on me and carried me out the window. Then they helped me cross the street,” he said, describing the rescue. “The current was so strong that it knocked me over twice.”

The dramatic video shows a scene that at least half a dozen other drivers on the same road have probably experienced.

Yoan Falcon described in Spanish what he and his family felt like when they were suddenly washed away.

He said the strong current came suddenly and took him by surprise.

The family managed to climb out of their car and stand on a nearby sidewalk until help arrived.

No major injuries were reported.

Further down the street there was an unusual sight: a row of about a dozen garbage cans that had been washed down from a nearby neighborhood.

Alamo Heights city officials had to collect mountains of garbage that had been dumped from trash cans onto the street.

Almost as suddenly as the flooding had begun, the water began to recede.

Within a few hours, everything on N. New Braunfels Avenue appeared to be back to normal, except for a few scattered pieces of debris that had been washed into the water.
