Tennis comeback: Olympic champion does not want to “rush anything”

Belinda Bencic is working on her tennis comeback after the birth of her first child. However, the 2021 Olympic champion will not yet commit to a precise date when she will return to the WTA Tour.

“I don’t want to set a date or a deadline for my comeback yet, I don’t want to be put under time pressure, I want to come back when I’m really ready,” Bencic revealed in a video from her sponsor Groupe Mutuel.

She currently plays tennis for an hour a day and also does one to one and a half hours of fitness training, giving the 27-year-old an insight into her work. “Compared to before, that’s not much, but compared to during pregnancy, it’s a lot. I’m also tired after these days,” revealed Bencic.

It is important “to start slowly to avoid injuries and so that the body can slowly get used to the ever-increasing strain,” explained the Swiss woman.

They had to be careful “that I didn’t put myself under too much strain. So at the moment I’m not pushing myself beyond my limits. First I want to get back to my old fitness and then it will be time for me to push myself beyond my limits,” the tennis ace continued.

Bencic became a mother for the first time in April. “I would like to come back – not as quickly as possible, but still very quickly – but I don’t want to rush anything either,” she revealed.

Bencic has already won seven WTA titles during her tennis career. Her highest ranking in the world was fourth in February 2020. Bencic celebrated her greatest success to date at the 2021 Olympics by winning the gold medal in singles. She also won silver in doubles in Tokyo.

“From tournament life, I miss the emotions you have after winning a match and the moments on the court,” said Bencic, who is already looking forward to her comeback on the court.
