Title dream lives on! Krawietz/Pütz in the semifinals of the US Open

Title dream lives on! Krawietz/Pütz in the semifinals of the US Open

After failing in the first round at their joint US Open debut last year, Kevin Krawietz and Tim Pütz have apparently found their rhythm in New York 2024. After reaching the semifinals, the DTB doubles can even dream of their first title in Flushing Meadows.

The Davis Cup doubles Kevin Krawietz and Tim Pütz fought each other in the semifinals of the US Open. The German pair defeated the Argentinians Máximo González and Andrés Molteni 6:7 (11:13), 6:4, 6:1 in the quarterfinals.

“We are happy that we are through. The first set was long and intense. After that we served very well,” said Krawietz after the party, outlining the reasons for the victory.

The 32-year-old, who won the French Open twice with his former doubles partner Andrea Mies, also reached the semifinals in the Big Apple with Mies in 2019. Pütz’s best performance dates back to 2022, when he was eliminated in the round of 16 with Australian Michael Venus. Pütz won his only Grand Slam title to date in 2023 alongside Japanese Miyu Kato in the mixed doubles competition at the French Open. In the final, he faced Venus Williams, among others.

In 2024, Krawietz/Pütz reached the quarterfinals of the Australian Open and Wimbledon, but failed in the round of 16 at the French Open.

A high hurdle awaits Krawietz/Pütz in the semifinals

The 2024 US Open now marks the best joint performance at a major tournament. In order for the dream of the title to continue, however, Krawietz/Pütz must overcome a major hurdle in the semifinals on Thursday: the fourth-seeded pairing of Marcelo Arévalo from El Salvador and Mate Pavic from Croatia.

This duel has already taken place four times in 2024. At the Australian Open and the Masters in Indian Wells, the Germans won on hard court, at the French Open they lost on clay and at the Masters in Monaco (hard court) they also suffered a narrow defeat in mid-August.

A look at the successes underlines how difficult the task will be. Pavic won every Grand Slam once in the men’s doubles, and in the mixed doubles he celebrated a victory in Australia, Wimbledon and the USA. He reached the final of the French Open twice. Arevola won twice at Roland Garros: in 2024 with Pavic, in 2022 with the Dutchman Jean-Julien Rojer.
