Traffic jam due to construction site on A1

Due to construction work, Autobahn 1 between Hamburg-Billstedt and -Moorfleet will be narrowed towards Bremen for three weeks. The work began on Monday. Instead of the usual three lanes, only two lanes will be available to traffic, and on several nights only one lane, as Autobahn GmbH Nord announced. This is now leading to traffic jams.

In the morning, there was eleven kilometers of traffic congestion on the A1 between the Hamburg-Ost junction and the Norderelbe triangle. On the A25 between the Hamburg-Neuallermöhe-West junction and the Hamburg Südost triangle, there was a traffic jam of around five kilometers, according to the traffic control center. There was also an eight-kilometer traffic jam on the A24 between Reinbek and Hamburg-Horn.

The motorway section in the southeast of Hamburg is one of the busiest motorways in Germany. On average, 136,000 vehicles pass through it every day, around 21 percent of which are trucks. The A1 bundles the traffic from the Baltic Sea region and Scandinavia, which flows past Hamburg over the Elbe bridges. According to Autobahn GmbH, the construction site section was last completely renovated in 2008.
