After a good two months without a club, Mats Hummels is about to sign with AS Roma. According to “Sky” journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, the former BVB professional has a one-year contract waiting for him – Hummels is expected at 12 noon for a medical check and to sign the contract. This would end a rumor-laden summer in Rome for the central defender, where he would now be one of four central defenders. However, another is set to be added.

During the summer transfer window, Roma invested 91.1 million euros in nine new players and after deadline day they brought in Mario Hermoso, the world’s most valuable center-back without a club. The former Atlético professional signed on Monday until 2027. In addition to Hummels, Di Marzio also wants to bring back Konstantinos Manolas (33), who played for the Giallorossi from 2014 to 2019 and was on the field 139 times with Roma coach Daniele de Rossi. Hummels only knows his prospective coach as an opponent: they have met three times in international matches.

For Hummels, Roma would be his first foreign stop after a career at BVB and FC Bayern, and the path there was lined with twelve rumours in the rumour mill: Real Sociedad, Brighton, Bologna, Bayer 04 and Mallorca were among the clubs that were recently linked with the most valuable German footballers without a club. The Romans, who started the Serie A season with two draws and one defeat, have Hermoso, Gianluca Mancini (28) and ex-Frankfurt player Evan Ndicka (25) at their disposal for the centre of defence – all of them have a market value of 25 million euros each.

However, Hummels has the most experience. At 35, he would be by far the oldest player in De Rossi’s squad. Since Monday, that player has been 32-year-old goalkeeper Mathew Ryan, who came from Alkmaar on a free transfer in the summer. Before that, it was Chris Smalling (34), who moved to Al-Fayha in Saudi Arabia.

Hummels could play in Serie A for the first time on 15 September in the away match against Genoa and could next play in Germany on 30 January when Roma visit Eintracht Frankfurt at the end of the Europa League league phase. Before that, however, the one-year contract must be signed – according to media reports, one such contract was already waiting for him in other cities this summer. In general, when transfer expert Di Marzio makes a big announcement, the club’s confirmation is not long in coming.
