After storm: landslide on railway line in Rhineland-Palatinate

21:53: After a storm in Rhineland-Palatinate, the railway line between Bad Kreuznach and Bingen is closed due to a landslide. Road traffic is also affected because earth slid from a slope onto the federal highway 9. The line between Trechtingshausen and Niederheimbach has been closed in both directions, the police in Mainz announced in the evening. The latest information was that no injuries were sustained in the landslide.

Severe weather warning: Extreme storms and 100 litres of rain expected

16:29: A particularly threatening mixture of tropical and Atlantic air is currently brewing over Western Europe. The first thunderstorms are already moving across Germany today – but before that, temperatures will rise again. In the east of the country, we can expect peak temperatures of 35 to 37 degrees on Wednesday. If this weather situation had started in July or August, 40 degrees or more would have been likely.

Towards the end of the week, the risk of severe weather with heavy rain and hail increases. The forecast rainfall amounts are extremely alarming.

Heavy rain causes hundreds of fire brigade operations in NRW – new thunderstorms threaten today

Tuesday, 03 September, 08.22 am: Thunderstorms that passed through North Rhine-Westphalia in the evening caused large amounts of rain in a short space of time in some places. The fire service had to be called out to hundreds of different cities. However, the situation returned to normal during the course of the evening and the night into Tuesday. New thunderstorms and showers are expected this morning, which could also bring heavy rain again, especially in the eastern mountains.

According to the Ratingen fire department, a heavy rain cell moved across the city and caused water damage, particularly in the Breitscheid and Lintorf districts. By early evening alone, 120 damage reports had been received. The fire department was deployed with around 100 emergency personnel to deal with the situation.

The Duisburg fire department also reported many operations as a result of a strong thunderstorm. In Huckingen, a lightning strike caused a roof fire that made the affected semi-detached house uninhabitable. In addition, bridge underpasses were flooded and people had to be rescued from their vehicles.

The fire brigade was particularly active in the city centre and in the south of Duisburg. In addition to the professional fire brigade, all units of the volunteer fire brigade were alerted. A total of 250 firefighters were deployed, including 175 volunteer firefighters.

The Dinslaken fire department also had its hands full and had to deal with flooded basements and streets. The fire department control center in Wesel said that they had received more than 1,000 calls and had been dispatched to 260 to 280 operations. No human lives were in danger. Shortly before 10 p.m. the situation had largely returned to normal.

In the morning, the police in the Wesel district reported 23 weather-related police operations during the night. Dinslaken, Voerde and Hünxe were particularly affected. Operations were mainly due to flooded streets and underpasses. There were a few fallen trees on the street. In Xanten, lightning is suspected to have struck an electrical box. This caused a short circuit and a line smoldered slightly.

Meteorological start of autumn: Still hot in parts

Saturday, August 31, 12.17pm: Although autumn begins meteorologically on Sunday, it will remain warm like midsummer – especially in the lower half of the country. In the north and northeast, according to the German Weather Service (DWD), it will continue to be cooler with temperatures of up to 25 degrees Celsius. In the west and southwest, temperatures will rise to up to 33 degrees.

“Everything is approaching a low-pressure trough in the south and southwest,” explained DWD meteorologist Sebastian Schapper. On Sunday afternoon, isolated showers and sometimes strong thunderstorms will form. “In some places, these can reach the level of severe weather due to the high-energy air mass.”

“At the start of the new week, the influence of low air pressure will spread to the entire western half,” said the meteorologist. Heavy showers and thunderstorms could occur there repeatedly until Thursday. Local storms and heavy rain are also to be expected. The eastern half will hardly be affected. It will remain mostly sunny, hot and dry there.
