Oldenburg – With an “anniversary day” in the sports hall on Haarenufer, the Oldenburger TB is celebrating the 70th anniversary of the basketball department, founded in 1954, this Saturday. “All members and friends of the OTB-Baskets are welcome,” explains Uli Scheler, head of the department, which has “continuously developed into a stronghold in northern Germany” over the past 70 years.

The first men’s team currently plays in the 1st Regional League, while the women have managed to get promoted back to the 2nd Regional League. Before the professional division was separated and the EWE Baskets were founded around the turn of the millennium, the OTB had already played in the 1st Bundesliga for seven years (1966 to 1971, 1985/86, 1987/88) and won three German championships in the men’s youth division (1962, 1965, 2009).

“In addition, national players have emerged from the OTB: ‘Nudel’ Niedlich and Benno Bünnemeyer 60 years ago, Jan Niklas Wimberg as an Olympic participant in 2008 and this year Matti Oldiges in the youth sector,” says Klaus Kertscher, giving examples of the successful work that will be documented on Saturday with three youth games at 11 a.m. (female U14 – TV Falkenberg), 1 p.m. (male U13 – U14) and 3.30 p.m. (internal game of the male U16). At 6.30 p.m. the OTB men will meet TSV Quakenbrück.
