If only women had voted in the state elections, the result would be different: In both Saxony and Thuringia, the AfD received 11 percent more votes among men than women. Sociologist Ansgar Hudde has researched the voting behavior of women and men.

TIME ONLINE: Do you generally vote for women rather than men?

Ansgar Hudde: Yes. The Greens, the Left Party and the SPD are more popular with women than with men. The CDU/CSU is fairly balanced. And the FDP and AfD are clearly predominantly voted for by men. However, the gender differences in Saxony and Thuringia are somewhat smaller than in previous elections and in other federal states.
