Voting behaviour of the sexes: “In the past, women voted more conservatively than men”

In the state elections in Saxony and Thuringia, the AfD received 11 percent more votes from men than from women. Sociologist Ansgar Hudde researched voting behavior and found that women generally vote more left-wing than men. It used to be the other way around, but since the 2000s, women have voted significantly more left-wing overall. This could be related to labor market conditions and equality issues. Hudde explains that right-wing parties like the AfD appeal to feelings of nostalgia, which men are more susceptible to. If the trend continues, men’s and women’s parties could emerge, which could politicize and polarize equality issues. In Saxony and Thuringia, gender differences in the electorate are smaller because the AfD is socially accepted there.
