China investigates Canadian rapeseed imports after tariffs on electric cars

The Chinese Ministry of Commerce announced on Tuesday that it would launch an anti-dumping investigation into rapeseed imports from Canada, days after the United States’ northern neighbor agreed to impose 100 percent tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles in line with similar taxes imposed by the United States and the European Union.

The world’s second-largest economy will also consider reviewing imports of Canadian chemicals, according to a statement published online.

“China firmly opposes Canada’s unilateral and discriminatory measures,” the ministry said. “The country will take all necessary measures to protect the rights of Chinese companies.”

Citing complaints from the domestic industry, the ministry said Canada’s canola imports reached a total trade value of $3.5 billion in 2023 – an increase of 170 percent over the previous year – and that the price trend continued downward.

Canada is the world’s largest exporter of rapeseed – used in food preparation and as biofuel – and China its largest customerAccording to the General Administration of Customs, the country imported 63.5 percent of its rapeseed in 2023, an increase of 29.9 percentage points compared to the 2022 figure.
