Report: 49ers and Trent Williams trying to close a deal

The 49ers completed a deal with wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk last week and could do the same with left tackle Trent Williams this week.

Williams has stayed away from training camp as he hopes to adjust a contract that no longer includes guaranteed salary, and his status for the season opener is uncertain due to the ongoing contract deadlock. Tuesday, however, offers some hope that the 49ers can use their star against the Jets.

William’s brother posted video of the tackle stepping off a plane in the Bay Area on Monday night, and ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that Williams and the 49ers are working on a deal that would bring him back to the team.

Those are positive signs, but neither Niners will throw the ball until it’s actually in the end zone, and Williams’ readiness for the opening play will remain in question until the team sees him on the field. That seems closer than any other point of the summer, and we’ll be waiting for word that the two sides have reached the finish line.
