Although the Social Security Administration sends out checks monthly and your check arrives at the same time each month, not everyone receives their checks on the same day.

Instead, Social Security checks are scheduled based on the month you were born and when you began receiving benefits.

How is the social security payment date determined?

Social Security payments are usually made starting on the second Wednesday of the month. The remaining two payments are made on the following two Wednesdays of the month. The week you receive your payment depends on your date of birth. There is one big exception, which I’ll discuss below.

Date of birth between: Date of social security audit
1. and 10. 2nd Wednesday of the month
11th and 20th 3rd Wednesday of the month
21 and 31 4th Wednesday of the month

Will I receive my other government benefits on the same day?

If you received benefits before May 1997, or if you receive both benefits and supplemental benefits, your payment schedule is not determined by your birth date. Instead, payments are paid on the same day each month, with a few exceptions that I explain below.

Social Security payments are paid on the 3rd of each month, while SSI payments are paid on the 1st of each month. These dates sometimes change if the 1st or 3rd of the month falls on a weekend or holiday. For example, March 3 fell on a weekend, so Social Security recipients received their March payments two days early, on March 1st. The same will happen in the month of November.

The only benefits paid according to the same scheme are social insurance and social insurance for disability.

If your check does not arrive when scheduled or at all, the Social Security Administration recommends waiting three additional mail days before contacting them. After that, you can call the national toll-free number: 1-800-772-1213

The SSA notes that “wait times to speak to a representative are typically shorter in the morning, later in the week, and later in the month.”

If you cannot reach the SSA using the national number, you can use the office locator to find a local office you can contact.
