Angelina Jolie says she stopped singing after an ex criticized her voice

Angelina Jolie recently admitted that some harsh words from a former partner made her question whether she would ever be able to sing again.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter published on FridayThe Oscar winner revealed that she was hesitant to sing in the new biopic “Maria,” in which she plays the influential opera singer Maria Callas, because one of her friend’s ex-boyfriends had made harsh criticisms about her voice.

“It was an out-of-body experience because I don’t sing,” Jolie said of rediscovering her voice in the upcoming film. “There was someone in my life who wasn’t nice to me about singing. I was in a relationship. And so I just assumed I couldn’t really sing.”

“I went to drama school, so it was weird that it had any effect on me at all,” she continued. “I just conformed to that person’s opinion. So I had to overcome a lot of things to start singing.”

Jolie did not specify which of her ex-boyfriends had complained about her voice, but the actor was known to have been married in several high-profile marriages.

From 1996 to 1999 she was married to her “Hackers” co-star Jonny Lee Miller.

In 2000, she married fellow actor Billy Bob Thornton, but the couple separated in 2003.

She later married Brad Pitt in 2014 after meeting on the set of “Mr. & Mrs. Smith.” However, Jolie filed for divorce from Pitt in 2016, citing irreconcilable differences.

The former couple has six children together: Maddox, Pax, Zahara, Shiloh, Knox and Vivienne.

Jolie and Pitt are currently embroiled in a seemingly never-ending legal battle. The fight over custody of their six children began when Jolie filed for divorce and evolved into a messy dispute over their French vineyard.

The ordeal escalated in 2022 after Pitt sued Jolie for breach of contract when the “Salt” actress sold her part of the business, triggering the lawsuit.
