Women: Dream start for VfL Bochum, SGS Essen loses at the start

This is how VfL Bochum wanted to start their 2nd Bundesliga campaign. SGS Essen lost against Hoffenheim.

After the first game against Bayern Munich II had to be postponed, the women of the VfL Bochum on Sunday in the 2nd Bundesliga. And game one after promotion became the next highlight.

The match against Eintracht Frankfurt II ended in the 78th minute, at which point most visitors were already expecting a 0:0. Then it was Lilly Huber who was in the right place after a corner and made it 1:0 for the coach’s team Kyra Malinowski ,

The score remained 1-0 and VfL celebrated the perfect start to the 2nd Bundesliga. Malinowski emphasised: “It’s a great feeling that we were able to start the league like this. With an extra week’s break, the anticipation was even greater. We were fired up and really wanted to keep the three points here. It was a real feat of strength, but we are all the happier that we managed it. After the way the game went, we couldn’t have complained if we had shared the points. The belief in victory was there the whole time and that gives us a real boost for the next few weeks. We’re looking forward to Kiel, we want to live up to our role as favourites and reach the next round.”

In two weeks (September 15th, 2 p.m.) VfL will travel to FSV Gütersloh 2009. Before that, they will play the second round match against Kieler MTV in the DFB Cup (Saturday, September 7th, 2 p.m.). Malinowski: “Now we’re fully focused on Kiel.”

SGS Essen loses at the start of the Bundesliga

Things aren’t going so well for SGS Essen in the Women’s Bundesliga. They lost their opening match against TSG 1899 Hoffenheim 1:2. Selena Cerci and Erleta Mermeti put the Sinsheim team 2:0 ahead.

Annalena Rieke was only able to shorten the gap for Essen. In two weeks, the SGS will have to travel to 1. FC Köln on the second match day (Sunday, September 15th, 6:30 p.m.), who lost their first game at RB Leipzig 1:2. Before that, however, there is the cup match at DJK Wacker Mecklenbeck (Sunday, September 8th, 3:30 p.m.).
