Ligue 1 result: Monaco holds, perfect start to French season is ended by Lens

Monaco’s perfect start to the Ligue 1 season ended on Sunday when Przemyslaw Frankowski converted a penalty in injury time to earn Lens a 1-1 draw in sweltering heat in the principality.

Monaco looked set to record their third win in three games this season when Denis Zakaria gave them the lead with a header six minutes from time at the Stade Louis II.

This goal was a bitter blow for Lens after Adrien Thomasson and Wesley Said had hit the same post within seconds of each other in the first half and a goal by Remy Labeau Lascary was disallowed after the break for handball.

But then the team got lucky when Zakaria deflected a shot with his hand in his own penalty area and the referee awarded Lens a penalty after a VAR review.

Polish international Frankowski converted the penalty in the fourth minute of injury time. Both teams are level on seven points in the still young table, with table leaders Marseille only behind them on goal difference.

The end result was a big win for Lens after the club were knocked out of the UEFA Conference League during the week when they lost the play-off tie against Panathinaikos in Greece, failing to secure a place in the league stage.

Monaco will play in the Champions League after finishing last season as runners-up in Ligue 1, and the principality side will begin their campaign on September 19 with a home match against Barcelona.

Marseille are top of the table after Mason Greenwood scored twice in their 3-1 win at Toulouse on Saturday.

Reigning champions PSG travel to Lille later and both teams know that a win would keep them at the top of the table.

Nice recorded its first win of the season on Sunday when Evann Guessand scored twice in a 4-1 victory at Angers. The team has lost all three games since returning to the top flight.

Le Havre came from behind to beat Auxerre 3-1 in Normandy. Japanese Junya Ito and Ivory Coast striker Oumar Diakite scored the goals as Reims recovered from an early goal to beat Rennes 2-1.
