Residents protest at College Square and demand justice for the victim

Calcutta (West Bengal) [India]September 1 (ANI): People from different communities in Kolkata on Sunday took to the streets to express their grief following the rape and murder of a junior doctor in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on the night of August 9 in Kolkata.

Residents of the city held a protest march from College Square towards Dharmatala. During the march to Dharmatala, protesters held a banner reading “I want justice for my sisters”.

TMC representatives and workers also held a protest rally against the rape and murder case in Kolkata today.

They called on the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to disclose the status of the investigation into the case and to provide for the death penalty in the Constitution for perpetrators of such crimes.

Speaking at the inauguration of the two-day National District Judicial Conference at Bharat Mandapam this morning, Prime Minister Narendra Modi stressed that many stringent laws have been enacted in the country to protect women.

“Atrocities against women and safety of children are a serious concern of society today. Many strict laws have been enacted in the country to protect women, but we need to make them more proactive. The faster the cases of atrocities against women are decided, the more safety half the population will have,” said Prime Minister Modi.

Doctors in several states have held protests demanding justice for the victim, whose body was found in the seminar room of the state medical college and hospital in early August.

Following this horrific and brutal incident, doctors also called for stricter safety laws for medical personnel.

The sexual assault on the assistant doctor has sparked great outrage and shaken the country’s conscience.

Following an order of the Calcutta High Court, the case was handed over to the CBI by the Calcutta Police.

Sanjay Roy, a volunteer at the hospital, was arrested in connection with the incident.

The alleged murder and sexual assault of a trainee doctor on August 9 at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata has sparked a war of words between the BJP and the party demanding Mamata Banerjee’s resignation.
