Two passengers on a domestic flight in China locked a one-year-old girl in the airplane bathroom because she wouldn’t stop crying, sparking a heated online debate about how to deal with children’s tantrums in public.

The incident came to light after a passenger posted a video on Douyin, the Chinese version of TikTok.

The footage shows the toddler locked in the bathroom and crying while a woman sits on the toilet and tells her she will not be released until she stops.

The child tries to escape from the woman’s grip and reaches for the door. This incident occurred on August 24 on a Juneyao Airlines flight from Guiyang to Shanghai, it was reported CNN.

The child, who was travelling with her grandparents, cried loudly during the flight. Eventually, the grandmother allowed two strange female passengers to take her granddaughter to the toilet. One of the passengers filmed the ordeal and later uploaded it to social media.

When the baby finally stopped crying, a woman picked it up and warned: “If you make any more noise, we’ll come back here.”

The video was also shared on Weibo, another Chinese social media platform, where it quickly drew harsh criticism for the treatment of the child. Many Weibo users called the action “cold-blooded” and “inappropriate.”

In response to the growing backlash, Juneyao Airlines customer service publicly apologized and admitted that the incident was a “crew oversight.” The Independent.

The child’s mother later spoke out about the incident. In a statement from Juneyao Airlines, she mentioned that she was aware of the incidents and expressed her “understanding” of the women’s actions, acknowledging their attempt to help during the flight.
